Scientists from SibFU have read droughts’ history during tree lifespan from its wood anatomical structure
08.16.2018
Scientists from Siberian Federal University (SibFU) proved that features of tree rings’ structure contain information about climatic conditions, and particularly about moisture deficit periods. Director of Khakass Technical Institute, Candidate of Biological Sciences Babushkina Elena took part in this study.
First hypotheses about possibility of climatic reconstruction based on tree rings’ anatomical structure were offered about 20 years ago. However, only recently methodological development allowed to prove them with sufficient integrity. This was made possible by modeling the tree ring development processes, and also due to the new possibilities of measurements of the wood cells parameters (cell size, wall thickness, lumen area, etc.).
More details about the study can be found on the TASS portal.
Results were published in the Dendrochronologia journal.
